Ducking the Truth: The Real American Dynasty
(By American Zen's Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari.)
"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men." - Phil Robertson, GQ
"Free speech is an endangered species: Those 'intolerants' hatin' & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all." -Sarah Palin from her Mooselini Twitter balcony

There are many things that do not subscribe to common sense in the Phil Robertson storm raging across the internet. The first that comes to mind is why A&E, a cable channel that's quickly acquiring a reputation for putting out some of the best shows on television, would want to shovel boatloads of money at the boots of a man who'd already made millions with his patented kazoo, a man who makes Jed Clampett look like Cary Grant by conspicuous relief. Another is what A&E's executives were thinking in putting a bunch of hillbillies on their network when it was obvious that they'd eventually say something stupid and embarrass the network. The only wonder is that it took four years for this to happen.
Another question is why ignorant right wingers and fellow hillbillies like Sarah Palin are screaming about the First Amendment as if that's some guarantee of getting a reality show and how a Constitutional amendment somehow applies to a network (i.e. part of the Free Market) when all it does is safeguard individual rights from the overreach of government.
Another is why freedom of speech is so important in Phil Robertson's case and not Phil Donahue's or Dan Rather's or the Dixie Chicks or Linda Ronstadt or Martin Bashir or... Well, you get the idea.
In the cases of the abovementioned, all these people did was speak truth to power. Back in 2003, Phil Donahue had his highly-rated MSNBC (You know, the "liberal network") show pulled off the air ten years ago for criticizing the Iraq war and the Bush administration's constantly-shifting rationales for it. Dan Rather was essentially forced to resign from his chair hosting the CBS Evening News for a 60 Minutes II segment the following year for simply telling the truth about George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard service because they didn't vet 100% of the documentation. In fact, the fallout over that flap was so all-pervasive, four producers lost their jobs and 60 Minutes II was immediately cancelled despite respectable ratings. In fact, it salted much of CBS's earth because of the furious pushback from a few partisan right wing bloggers.
Linda Ronstadt's career took a nosedive when she inveighed against Bush during a show in Las Vegas when she lauded Michael Moore's new movie Fahrenheit 911, a movie that had set box office records for its genre. She was not only booed off the stage, she was booted from the casino. Ronstadt's only mistake was in overestimating the liberal sensibilities of your typical nightclub audience, an entertainment demographic that's notoriously conservative and completely out-of-touch. In fact, news reports at the time said,
Ronstadt's comments drew loud boos and some of the 4,500 people in attendance stormed out of the theater. People also tore down concert posters and tossed cocktails into the air. Timmins, who is British and was watching the show, decided Ronstadt, who was booked to play only one show at the venue, had to go -- for good. Timmins said he didn't allow Ronstadt back in her luxury suite and she was escorted off the property.
All for telling people to go see a movie.
The Dixie Chicks can tell you all about the right wing's sanctity of free speech. Nearly 11 years ago, Natalie Maines also took a moment from their set list in London, England to say, “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.” Does that not qualify as an opinion as much as Phil Robertson's ignorant dismissal of gayness and likening it to bestiality?
The Dixie Chicks had to wait a decade for their careers to recover and all over criticizing a war and a "president" that hardly anyone who doesn't paint murals with their feces still defends. CD's were burned and there many war-crazed Americans who would've loved to have burned the women who made them and not in effigy.
To cite a more recent example, there was the coerced "resignation" of Martin Bashir, who suggested someone should shit in Sarah Palin's mouth on account of the woman's obvious idiocy. As with Phil Donahue a decade ago, the "liberal" MSNBC flew into a corporate rage over his comments and, after a meeting with the same Phil Griffin who'd suspended Keith Olbermann three years ago for making two minor contributions to Democratic campaigns without disclosure, Bashir effectively "resigned."

Those Who Wear Camou Suits and Have Camou Wallpaper Should Stay Hidden

It goes without saying that Bashir, the Dixie Chicks, Dan Rather and Phil Donahue have already been vindicated by history and posterity. Sarah Palin is indisputably an idiot and a failure in every professional aspect. The war in Iraq was unjust and we'd spent or will spend nearly $4 trillion on a war that bought us nearly 4500 coffins and the execution of a single tin pot dictator. George Bush did go AWOL from his Texas Air National Guard champagne flight and wound up, for reasons that haven't been fully explained to us, in Alabama, of all places. Phil Donahue was also justly critical of the war in Iraq. These people told the truth or expressed opinions that are no less valid, to say the very least, than those made by an ignorant redneck likening homosexuality to bestiality.
Now let's look beyond the irony of a hillbilly like Phil Robertson appearing in a magazine named Gentleman's Quarterly or of him inveighing against gay sex after making a fortune inventing and patenting something for other men to put in their mouths and look to the larger issue, one that's even larger than the rabid right wing's breathtaking hypocrisy in apportioning First Amendment rights only for those who echo their ignorant prejudices and biases.
It wasn't too long ago that Lara Logan flushed down the toilet whatever credibility she may've built up over the last decade as a war correspondent by taking part in what cannot even be called bad reporting but an outright hoax in 60 Minutes' take on the Benghazi attack. Essentially, Logan and the show's producers had willingly Curveballed themselves out of relevance and respectability by taking the word of a con artist who claimed to be there at the Benghazi embassy and even conned his way into a book deal that was later rescinded when the guy's story fell apart. Yet, 60 Minutes is still on the air, Lara Logan still has her job and the Benghazi hoax has been virtually forgotten despite it being one of the most shamelessly incompetent pieces of journalism in the world this year.
Time after time, we liberals are comforted by one survey and poll after another telling us that America is leaning more and more from the right wing regressive side of the political spectrum and to the progressive side. Yet our standards and tolerance for outright bullshit tells a different tale as right wing talking points and outright fabrications are troweled out on a daily basis virtually unchallenged (such as ObamaCare's failure when it still hasn't been officially implemented and Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi).
Those of us in the know knew way back when when the purges began 10 or 11 years ago that Rather, Donahue, the Dixie Chicks and Ronstadt were right. But the rest of us were whipped into a pro-war hysteria that simply wouldn't tolerate a dissenting opinion that's guaranteed to us in the same First Amendment that's now being touted as an example of why we ought to allow Robertson to spew what are obviously falsehoods. Again, A&E shouldn't be shocked about Robertson's pronouncements. After all, he's the patriarch of a family that looks like an inbred Appalachian cult and his Bible-banging pretensions are pretty typical for the Bible Belt.
So we've become a nation where gun nuts congregate at Starbuck's with our AR15's strapped to our backs, choke down Chik-Fil-A sandwiches and Freedom Fries, do our Christmas shopping at Hobby Lobby and cook Barilla pasta because the people who own and run these corporations echoed our pet prejudices and artificially gave us consensus. It doesn't matter to them that yesterday Utah got same sex marriage and the day before New Mexico did, making 18 states with marriage equality. It doesn't matter to these people that others who inveigh against the LGBT community aren't merely un-PC but hateful and prejudiced. It doesn't matter to them that just because Phil Robertson didn't see examples of racial prejudice in the 60's that it didn't exist. And it doesn't matter to these mouth-foamers that it's not free speech that's un-PC and no longer tolerated but outright lies and bigotry.
Again, if Martin Bashir or David Letterman say something critical about one neolithically stupid woman, it's off with their heads. But if Rush Limbaugh consistently makes misogynistic and demeaning comments about all women, calling one "a slut", that's his right as a Republican white male.
As long as our worst fears and bigotries are amplified in an echo chamber, there will always be a large segment of us who will insist on freedom of speech while screaming their fool heads off to figuratively or literally axe those who challenge those prejudices or speak inconvenient truths. We need to be lied to because the reality of our nation, that many of us still hate African Americans and gay people and that the pre-Civil Rights America wasn't just hunky dory, is still too horrible to confront.

New York City just elected its most progressive mayor in a generation -- and its only liberal talk radio outlet is closing up shop. What gives?
Posted by Jill | 6:26 AM
Readers of this blog know that I've been a big booster of progressive talk radio ever since March 31, 2004, when an unemployed Mr. Brilliant sat in his man cave at noon-oh-six to hear the first words out of Al Franken's mouth on the very first O'Franken Factor on the new Air America Radio's New York affiliate, WLIB. The next day we discovered the great Morning Sedition, and for a few brief and wondrous months, there was nonstop progressive talk radio in New York City. We all know about the financing fiasco, with Evan Cohen turning out to be a crook, and general mismanagement by just about all involved.

Air America burned brightly on the airwaves for a very short time, and then crashed and burned with the help of some of the most astonishingly bad upper management not named "Carly Fiorina." From The Lionel Show to The Satellite Sisters to Springer on the Radio, the name Air America is now remembered only for schlocky programming and ineptitude. But in its heyday, when one could sit with the dial or button tuned to WLIB from 6 AM, when Morning Sedition came on with Marc Maron exhorting, "Good morning, geniuses...philosopher kings and queens...working class heroes...progressive utopians with no sense of humor..." until one went to sleep at night, there was something brilliant happening out there in the airwaves, something that promised to be a very real alternative to the bellowings of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and Mark Levin and Michael Savage and the other hatemongers of right-wing talk. One of its rising stars was a young broadcaster from Massachusetts who had a show with Chuck D and Lizz Winstead. Her name was Rachel Maddow. You may have heard of her.

I was no stranger to prog-talk. I'd stumbled upon the IE America stream about a year or so earlier, when I'd listen to Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes and the few other voices of progressive talk out there. But to have them right there for the taking on terrestrial radio was like finding an oasis in a desert. But in 2006, the contract with WLIB ended, the station went "praise and inspiration" and Air America moved from its 1190 spot on the AM dial, to the much weaker signal of WWRL at 1600, where after 5 PM you can't hear a thing out here in the hinterlands of New Jersey. And that was the beginning of the end for Air America. Today, WWRL has up until now been a home for the last vestiges of talk radio, with the intrepid Mark Riley, late of Morning Sedition fame, running a polyglot call-in show mixing local issues with national ones; syndication of Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, and Randi Rhodes in between African-American interest broadcasting and infomercials for nutritional supplements.

But as of the end of the year, these last traces of prog-talk will be gone, as WWRL is going Spanish. Aside from the final nail in the coffin of prog-talk on AM radio in New York, this now means that there are basically only three genres on terrestrial AM radio now: Spanish, sports talk, and news, plus the AM public radio affiliate, just to make you think you have a choice. It may be that the last generation of AM radio listeners is dying out, and future generations will be all about internet radio, which could give podcasters like Air America veteran Sam Seder a larger voice (at no pay other than donations). But there is a loss when the most accessible PUBLIC airwaves only feature one point of view, and it is one of nonstop hate shouted by people with no sense of obligation to reality.

Before Air America began, my afternoon drive time choice was an odd one, and it was on the home of wingnut talk in New York, WABC. At afternoon drive time, the soft-spoken, mainstream liberal, Richard Bey (known best for a trash-TV show in the 1980s) went head-to-head with hysterical right-winger Steve Malzberg. It was engaging programming which gave me the opportunity to yell at the radio and work off the frustrations of the day. Bey was fired in 2003 for opposing the Iraq War and hasn't worked steadily in radio since. Today is his last day subbing for Mark Riley from 6-9 AM. You might want to give him a listen.

Oh, there are those who will say that there's still liberal radio, after all there's NPR (largely corporate-funded, and increasingly showing it), and WBAI, the endlessly-struggling Pacifica station. But Pacifica has always seemed kind of stuck in 1968 and its impotent sloganeering has long since grown tiresome. The early Air America programming was lively, if uneven, and had the gonzo energy of pirate radio, a sense of fun, of "Hey, kids, let's put on a radio show!", of throwing shit up against the wall to see what sticks. It was exhilirating and infuriating and perfect for the Bush years. Maybe as the Bush years settled into the perennial disappointment of the Obama years, we all just grew tired of the whole thing, tired of fighting a battle in which our own side couldn't be bothered to join us, instead preferring to take the scraps from the Koch brothers' table after the Republicans got done gorging themselves. Or maybe because unlike the right, we just don't draw our life energy from rage and fear and loathing 24 hours a day. What I do know is that as of January 1, New York will have its most progressive mayor in a generation, and no real radio voice for those who want to support him. WBAI is still going to be focused on freeing Mumia, the sports talkers will be screeching about how awful the Knicks are, and you'll be able to hear all the salsa you want.

Elvis Costello was on to something back in 1977 when he defied Lorne Michaels and insisted on playing his scathing ode to corporate radio on Saturday Night Live:

I was tuning in the shine on the light night dial
doing anything my radio advised
with every one of those late night stations
playing songs bringing tears to me eyes
I was seriously thinking about hiding the receiver
when the switch broke 'cause it's old
They're saying things that I can hardly believe.
They really think we're getting out of control.

[Chorus:]

Radio is a sound salvation
Radio is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don't give you any choice
'cause they think that it's treason.
So you had better do as you are told.
You better listen to the radio.

I wanna bite the hand that feeds me.
I wanna bite that hand so badly.
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me.
> Some of my friends sit around every evening
and they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
and the promise of an early bed
You either shut up or get cut up;
they don't wanna hear about it.
It's only inches on the reel-to-reel.
And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools
tryin' to anaesthetise the way that you feel

[Chorus]

Wonderful radio
Marvelous radio
Wonderful radio
Radio, radio...

What is This "War on Women" of Which You Speak, Stranger?
The National Socialist Party Republican Party of Michigan became the latest state to pass a rape insurance bill into law. And it doesn't even make exemptions for rape victims, one of the reasons why Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a similar, earlier bill.
And Republicans still laughably try to claim there's no war on women, which was sort of the rationale we used to kill two million Vietnamese in the 60's and 70's. "War? What war? We didn't officially declare war on Vietnam."
The GOP has advanced women's rights about as much as Jack the Ripper. And even Jack had the sense to stop while he was ahead. Piss on these misogynistic, fascist motherfuckers.

The War on Christmas
Yes, it's that time of year again when the silly season gets even sillier when right-thinking Christians impose on the rest of us how we ought to be spending a pagan holiday. Such as the above gift idea for that gun-clutching relative every family has and pretends to tolerate every Christmas. And what better way to silence blasphemous liberal tongues calling for background checks and national registries than to figuratively shoot their tongues off with these semi-auto ice cubes? Imagine the looks on your liberal relatives' faces when they look into their drinks and see this baby bobbing up and down like a murder weapon that just won't go away! To quote Emeril, "Can I freshen your drink? Bam, Bam!"

Continuing our theme of NRA-themed holiday gifts, how about this fabulous Millennial clock from the official NRA store that features not only the time and 2nd Amendment but also conceals a small- to medium-sized handgun? Not only does this fine, furniture-grade accessory conceal weapons and tell the time, the built-in alarm even chimes every time a militia group announces a coup against the government, which is about 12 times a day.

Moving on, when having 33 rounds in a ridiculously extended clip just isn't enough, there's this baby...
...in case you still can't hit your target from point blank to medium-range 33 times in a row and need to get even closer for that eye-to-eye debate with anyone who even just looks at you funny, as they likely will after you miss them with 33 shots in a row. Yes, that is a mini bayonet for a Glock 9mm handgun. Now, finally, good guys with guns may actually do some damage when they throw their empty gun at someone!

As proof that we haven't even come close to peak oil, there's this Tim Taylor-inspired monstrosity to consider for the back yard chef of the family: A 345 horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI engine-powered grill wrapped up in 330 feet of stainless steel. With the V-8 engine, you can get about 30 hot dogs per gallon and the nearly 350 ponies will flash-fry a herd of buffalo in three minutes flat. Yes, the tyranny of clean-burning propane's now a thing of the past, guys. Who cares about the exhaust and what's a little global warming among friends, right?

Who coined the phrase, "No pain, no gain"?
Now, thanks to fine retailers like this one, one can sport tough-looking tattoos without actually experiencing the pain of getting them. For less than $7.50 an arm, you, too, can look like you belong to a South Central LA street gang or survived multiple prison shower rapes. Perfect for that conservative brother or son in law who wants to look bad-ass yet just can't seem to get over that childhood fear of needles.

In case you're averse to Black Friday or going to the mall, there's always eBay. And as long as there's eBay, why not get something else for that Obama-hating conspiracy theorist in the family such as these skeet-shooting Obama targets?

And, just in case you have an Obama-hater in the family but one who's passive-aggressive, there's this Obama Urinal target also for sale on eBay for less than two and a half bucks!

What would Christmas be without having a spirited debate about inert bundles of cells with your church lady aunt? She can now win any abortion debate at the dinner table simply by hanging this grotesque, heavily-veined ornament of a fetus too young to enjoy Christmas. Yes, it's part of the Pro-Life Crusader Christmas Tree Ornament line! And we all know the original definition of the word crusader don't we? "Adopt my extremist Christian views, heathen, or I will turn you into a rotting corpse." Amen!

Got a misguided, lib'ral-minded youngster in the house? Then give the adorable but ideologically-crippled little tyke this really big Ted Cruz coloring book from Really Big Coloring Books! Yes, this masterpiece of children's literature joins "Rapey" Rush Limbaugh's factual historical account of the talking horses and cell phones of the American Revolution by indoctrinating edumacating impressionable minds about the evils of ObamaCare. Yes, in this "non partisan" coloring book, Tailgunner Ted and his shiny super suit reminds our nation's future that America is a Christian nation, that providing health care to those who want it is bad business and that ObamaCare is the greatest scourge since... well, since ever! (The first 1000 who order will get a box of free crayons. Unfortunately, they're all white and flesh tone.)

Saturday Music Blogging
Posted by Jill | 3:20 PM
The Soweto Gospel Choir, in a flashmob tribute to Nelson Mandela:

What strikes me most about this video, other than the beauty of the music and these people, is watching all the white people applauding a group of black people singing and ending with their fists in the air. Can you imagine what Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson and the other pearl-clutchers of Faux Noise would do at the sight of something like this here in the US?

Apartheid began to be dismantled in South Africa in 1990 and ended once and for all in 1994. That's less than twenty years ago, and the races in South Africa have learned how to live together in a harmonious, mutually-respectful society. Here in the US, slavery ended in 1865 -- over 140 years ago -- and we are having cable news anchors having the vapors over black Santa Clauses. What the fuck is wrong with us?

Phoning it in Again

This also happens to be my Twitter avatar for the rest of the year, although I must say I've been a bit more productive than this incarnation of Santa Claus. You'll make my nice list if you mail this to Megyn Kelly at Fox.
Anyway, with Scott Carson, Buffalo Bull, Annie Oakley, Sitting Bull and Arthur Conan-Doyle chasing down Jack the Ripper throughout the East End of London in the denouement of Tatterdemalion, plus doing the usual Christmas thing and keeping the household running, there's been no time for real-time blogging (although I've got the annual bizarre Christmas present post in the can plus I've been chipping away at Assclowns of the Year #3). So please accept this substitute for actual political/social commentary.

A suggestion for guys planning on having Christmas sex: Take off the ribbon first. Your lover will appreciate it later.

@EWDolan Megyn Kelly doubles down on ‘white Santa ’: I did it for the kids.* *Psst. The white ones.

Next I expect to hear Fox airhead Megyn Kelly try to claim Jesus was born not in Bethlehem but Grosse Point, Michigan. #RWNJs #p21 #p2 #tlot

#PraytoEndAbortion I'm praying to end the abortion that's known as the 113th Congress. Does that count?

Look at old films from 70, 80, 90, 100 years ago. You'll never see an obese person. Ever. Nowadays, even our ferrets are fat.

What Nelson Mandela Couldn't Teach Us
So, Nelson Mandela is a rotting corpse and Dick Cheney isn't. God, apparently, has kicked the bucket, too.
The world is now mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela, who died yesterday at 95. In our grief as a species, we mourn someone who was indisputably a more effective spiritual and human rights leader than he was South Africa's first black president. Mandela, through his tiny prison cell, and his countless millions of supporters, had shed a harsh, pitiless light on the apartheid South African government, surely one of the most brutal, repressive and fascist in the late 20th century.
What Republicans both then and now have forgotten is that South Africa was like a social time machine that brought us face-to-face with our own recent past. It was a classic case of, "We have met the enemy and it is us."
Witness Dick Cheney, who would go on to become one of the worst secretaries of defense, chiefs of staff and indisputably the worst vice president this nation ever suffered, voting against freeing Mandela. As recently as 2000, when Cheney and his brain-damaged running mate were on the campaign trail, Cheney remained unrepentant about keeping Mandela in jail, saying on ABC's This Week,
"The ANC was then viewed as a terrorist organization I don't have any problems at all with the vote I cast 20 years ago."
In 1986, the year the vote for the Comprehensive Anti Apartheid Act took place overriding Ronald's Reagan's veto to sanction the South African government unless apartheid ended and all political prisoners, including Mandela, were released, Big Dick stood tall like the massive, throbbing right wing hardon he's been his whole life, and voted to keep Mandela in prison. By the time of the vote, he'd been in prison for 23 years. By the time Cheney had made this incredibly stupid statement that should've cost Bush the presidency, Mandela had just wrapped up the year before a five-year term as South Africa's first black president. And Reagan's administration was so racist, Congress, with little help from Republicans, took the extraordinary measure of overturning Reagan's veto.
Mandela's legacy for human rights for all people, starting with his oppressed brothers and sisters, should stand in stark contrast to that of Reagan, a man whose administration was every bit as racist as that of Mandela's predecessor de Klerk. Reagan's legacy was in smashing unions like the one he'd belonged to while still a Democrat in Hollywood, ignoring AIDS to the point that he'd publicly mentioned it only once during his ruinous presidency, seized on one of history's inevitabilities, the fall of Communism and tried to take credit for it.
And, of course, he'd kicked off his first presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the place where three civil rights workers were brutally murdered in 1964, in a classic dog whistle speech that spoke about "states' rights."
Dick Cheney, while not as overtly racist as Reagan, nonetheless will always been seen as one of the more successful members of the WASPish Old White Men's Club that's been running the Capitol since Washington's time.
You would think it would be indisputable that Mandela wasn't a terrorist at all but a fearless man who'd been imprisoned for over a quarter of a century (27, to be exact) calling for the end of apartheid for a nation and a continent that rightfully should've belonged to his people or at the very least, one in which the indigenous people should've been given a seat at the big table.
But Cheney and others labeled Mr. Mandela as a terrorist because it was easier to simply believe he was or pretend to believe he was just as today when anyone who challenges the white, corporate status quo is also labelled a "terrorist" (especially since the post-9/11 definition of the word in both the media and in our courts has been expanded to cartoonish proportions).
Dick Cheney, like Reagan, stood with other middle-aged and elderly white men who believed that white people should be able to go to Africa, set up an oligarchy and rule over the indigenous people and that one of the oppressed should never have the temerity to pull an Oliver Twist and ask, "Please, sir, may I have another?"
So it was a lot easier to claim Mandela, a man who'd devoted his long life to peaceful, nonviolent protest, was a "terrorist" because our capricious government thought the African National Congress was full of terrorists.
Dick Cheney came into power in the early-mid 70's a time when Jim Crow, many of its laws just stricken from the books, was still more of a raw wound than a memory. Cheney, while he may not have have worn his racism on his sleeve as had Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond,, represented the Old Guard that was not spiritually, intellectually or emotionally agile enough to accept necessary change.
The Old Guard that Cheney has so ably defended, especially in the corporate sector, lived on in perhaps the most shameful episode in the history of the US Senate when Jesse Helms stood up and fiercely filibustered against making the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday a national holiday.
President Mandela will be remembered for trying to restore some basic human dignity to not only his own people but all oppressed people. In his golden years, he remained an ardent activist to those same ends and was a philanthropist.
Cheney will be remembered as the guy who used his connections to get a heart transplant then made the, well, incredibly heartless statement while pimping his new book about his transplant that, "it’s my new heart, not someone else’s old heart." Cheney will be remembered as the guy who personally OK'd Halliburton war profiteering contracts from his very office and ordered that post-Katrina electrical plants divert power away from five hospitals that needed it and to the Gulf coast refineries. Cheney is a great philanthropist in his own right, if a man's philanthropy can legitimately be limited to himself.
Paris lit up the Eiffel Tower last night in the colors of the South African flag to honor the late Mandela.
When Cheney's long-delayed time comes, a glowing, smoking fissure will open up in Death Valley and suck in his ragged, tattered soul to the demented supernatural chorus of the millions of lives he'd ruined and ended.

Top 10 Tips for GOP Congressmen Running Against Women
Today in Politico, it was reported that Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) and the National Republican Campaign Committee had sent Republican subordinates to an ad hoc charm school in order to teach them and their aides on how to address women, especially those running for their seats. This is part of the GOP's new outreach program designed to show they can be just as sensitive as their colleagues on the left side of the aisle. In the words of Politico, this means the NRCC "wants to make sure there are no Todd Akin-style gaffes next year." What were some of the top ten suggestions made to these Republicans about how to address women?
  • 10) "Women can shut down their ovaries after a legitimate rape but we'll stay mum on that until the results of Ted Nugent's study comes in."
  • 9) "Keep your clubs wrapped in velvet until after the election."
  • 8) "When ordering your female staffers to get your coffee, pick up your dry cleaning and buy your wife an anniversary present, it helps to say 'Please.'"
  • 7) "No more jokes about women casting hormone-influenced votes once a month if they're past menopause."
  • 6) "No, Congressman Rokita, Muslim fundamentalists are not onto something."
  • 5) "They will not sit on your face when asked, not even during your victory speeches."
  • 4) "Rush was right about Sandra Fluke but let's not admit it until after the polls close next year and 2016."
  • 3) "Remember your back braces on the campaign trail so your knuckles don't drag on the ground."
  • 2) "Wendy Davis isn't running for Congress so she's still fair game."
  • 1) "For those of you running against women, this may be a good time to rethink using file footage of Indira Gandhi and Benazir Bhutto and the caption, 'Maybe women and politics don't mix' in your campaign ads."

    Dawn of the Desperate
Being a socially-, economically- and politically-conscious liberal gives one a certain amount of moral superiority and schadenfreude. At no time is this latitude more readily and freely granted than on Black Friday (now permanently known as Black Thursday).
And maybe this was what the great George Romero had in mind 35 years ago when he directed the original Dawn of the Dead in 1978. It wasn't lost on film critics nor was it a mere thoughtless and random choice when Romero centered his movie around a mall. The sight of mindless zombies staggering around a mall with no purpose in mind other than finding some braaaiiiinnnssss was as much social satire as it was horror.
Romero's idea, obviously, was to show that even when humans come back from the dead as zombies, their instincts and whatever stubborn memories remaining even after death and decomposition will inevitably bring them back to where they spent much of their actual lives.
Indeed, what's the major difference between something like this...

         ...and something like this...

         ...or this...
         .....or this?

Many more smiles for both shoppers and retailers.

It's an irony that so many of us will willingly forgo spending time with loved ones on Thanksgiving waiting on lines for a week or more so we can get a few dollars off on a Christmas present for the very same people we'd abandoned a month earlier. This is the power of hype and the results are evident. Five years ago, to little fanfare, a Walmart worker was killed and a pregnant woman nearly trampled to death as they opened the doors on a Black Friday. Well, actually, they didn't have the chance to open the doors as 2000 shoppers literally burst in and tore the glass doors off their hinges. The store hired only two security guards and the only one who showed up watched in horror as the manager was safely hiding in a hotel. It incurred a $7000 fine that Walmart, to this very day, still hasn't paid. It's a wonder Walmart didn't issue a press release citing the death-by-asphyxiation of one of their own low-paid temp workers as a sign of consumer confidence rebounding.
Because, to give you an idea of just how truly evil Walmart's executives are, they'd rather spend tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars over a period of five years or more on shysters to fight a $7000 OSHA fine, a sum of money Alice Walton probably has in the ashtray of her car. Because if they pay the fine for not adequately protecting one of their workers (he was actually a low-paid temp), why, word might spread that Walmart has to safeguard the lives of their workers and we can't have that, now can we?

And just as Romero's 1978 movie makes a mockery of humans, specifically Americans and their post-mortem consumer instincts, so do we make a mockery of the Black Friday/Thursday protesters who are braving the elements and risking losing their jobs for doing what they think is right.
Sure, getting a bargain is a good thing, especially when money's tight.
But not at the expense of our human dignity, human lives and in the name of "honoring" one holiday while forgoing another.

    Thanksgiving Misgivings
Unfortunately, Squanto wasn't psychic. If he was, think of all the misery he could've saved his people.
But he wasn't. The Indians around Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts took pity on the settlers from the Mayflower and essentially kept them alive. Over the next four centuries, we repaid them with venereal disease and small pox, massive land grabs, raids, fascist resident schools and shunting them to reservations.
Because that's the way of the White Man and his Manifest Destiny.
And we're still seeing the same spirit today in mostly white corporate executives who have nothing left to steal from Native Americans and have moved on to the rest of us. Now they're after our pensions, our health care, our very dignity and will to live and fight. A cabal of 150 corporate executives, one of them Obama's jobs czar Jeff Immelt, called "Fix the Debt" is now busting a nut trying to raise the retirement age to at least 70, get rid of overtime pay, grab what few pension funds there are, freeze the minimum wage and God knows what else. Many of these corporate scumbags already have retirement funds of $140,000,000 or more.
Now, K-Mart, Walmart and, for the first time ever, Macy's is open today for business as well as hundreds if not thousands of retailers. K-Mart opened at 6 this morning and will be at it for 41 straight hours and who cares if their employees want to spend Thanksgiving with their families? According to the propaganda campaigns of these corporations, it'll be a "high energy day" for "associates" who just can't wait to forgo spending a major holiday with loved ones to wait on manic, murderous customers who would stick a shiv between their mother's ribs to get that extra 20% off on a plasma TV.
You think a single retail executive in this country is working on Thanksgiving?
And now, like the original colonists of 1620, many of us are fighting for bare survival. Only it seems there's no Squanto to save us from certain ruin. Our government quietly let the ARRA or Recovery Act lapse, leaving millions with less food assistance and no subsidization for their COBRA health coverage and millions will lose their unemployment benefits unless Congress acts because they simply don't give a shit about you. If you can't stuff millions in soft PAC money into their war chests, unless you can wine and dine them at the Four Seasons or the Pump Room or some other swanky restaurant, if you don't hold $10,000-a-plate fundraisers or foot the bill for golf junkets at St. Andrews, they want nothing to do with you. It is a government of the 1%, by the 1% and for the 1%.
Like the executive scum who've sent the word down to the regional, district and store levels that if you don't work on Thanksgiving, you're fired.
So, Squanto and his people are dead and gone and most of their descendants can't even help themselves let alone us, not that they'd want to. We have just each other, fellow human beings who are compassionate enough to look beyond our ken and to sympathize with the plight of others less fortunate than we. A certain Walmart store in Canton, Ohio proved that recently.
And if you're lucky as I am to be spending a quiet, peaceful Thanksgiving with a loved one or loved ones, please give a silent prayer or gesture of thanks to the people who are braving termination, ridicule and the cold protesting the ongoing theft by the 1% of our most basic ways and means of survival. Because they don't care about you any more than do their temp workers in the federal government.

    Caption Contest
Sometimes, captions just write themselves. Doesn't stop me from trying, though. But this caption should warm the cockles of any liberal heart sick to death of seeing bilge pumped out annually by right wing nut bags who still get put on our nation's bookshelves. Plus, there's something stomach-churning about an increasingly dirty-minded, sex-obsessed pedophile like Rush Limbaugh writing a children's book. Maybe he should've entitled it, "How I Spent My Summer on Hispaniola" and Palin could've named her holiday book, "A Child's Christmas and Wails."
So, shame me. Show me what you got and if I like it, I'll use my Paint program to put your caption in a future post.

Dear Scott Adams, Love Dilbert, but you're blaming the wrong person
Posted by Jill | 11:04 PM
Everyone who's ever worked in an office chuckles at Dilbert, but its creator, Scott Adams, is a douchebag. He likes to fancy himself a libertarian, but like many libertarians, he's just a douche. In his latest missive, he's decided that it's the government's fault that his 86-year-old father was being kept alive in a hospital by means he does not detail:

My father, age 86, is on the final approach to the long dirt nap (to use his own phrase). His mind is 98% gone, and all he has left is hours or possibly months of hideous unpleasantness in a hospital bed. I'll spare you the details, but it's as close to a living Hell as you can get.

If my dad were a cat, we would have put him to sleep long ago. And not once would we have looked back and thought too soon.

Because it's not too soon. It's far too late. His smallish estate pays about $8,000 per month to keep him in this state of perpetual suffering. Rarely has money been so poorly spent.

I'd like to proactively end his suffering and let him go out with some dignity. But my government says I can't make that decision. Neither can his doctors. So, for all practical purposes, the government is torturing my father until he dies.

Scotty, if you want to blame someone for this state of affairs, blame your father for not doing an advance directive. With an advance directive, you would have been able to meet with his doctors and determine what treatment was appropriate for his condition. Anyone who is in his or her eighties and doesn't have one should do one now. Even if you are younger, you should do one now.

I went to an attorney this week to draw up a will and an advance directive with a healthcare proxy, so that if I am ever in a situation like the one Mr. Brilliant was in, I'm not kept suspended between this world and the next for months or years with a tube to make me piss, another up my ass, a PICC line in my clavicle, an arterial line in my arm, and a ventilator and nasogastric feeding tube down my throat. That's not to say I don't want a chance at reasonable quality of life, but when to withdraw care isn't always a simple question, and I know that as well as anyone. I will always be grateful to Mr. B.'s doctors for heeding my pleas to be honest with me about his prognosis and whether it was going to be worth putting him through the invasive things he went through. They wanted as much as I did for him to come back from whatever place he went to when his brain started seizing and he had to be on heavy sedation and four anti-epilepsy drugs in order to quiet it enough to keep the seizures from coming back. There are people who have had strokes and left the neuro ICU with a trach and PEG and woke up six months later. But they are the exception, not the rule. And when it was clear that no amount of any medication was going to keep the seizures at bay without keeping him in a coma indefinitely, perhaps permanently, they offered him as quiet, painless, and fear-free an end as was possible. And they could do that because Mr. B. was thoughtful enough to make his wishes known well in advance.

So, Scott Adams, it wasn't the government keeping your father alive against YOUR will, since we don't know what his will was (and what the hell does his estate matter to you anyway? You're a fucking multimillionaire). It was your father himself, who put you, your family, and his doctors in the position of not knowing what he would want. You're blaming the wrong person, pal.
