He needed them to protect his family. Or for hunting. Or something.

The right wing mindset is extremely strange to me. These are the people who bought Dick Cheney's "One Percent Doctrine" hook, line, and sinker. The One Percenters believed that where Saddam Hussein was concerned, if there was a one percent change that he had WMD, we should proceed as if it were a certainty. This doctrine pevades Republican thought: If there is a one percent chance that ONE person might vote who is not eligible, we must strip hundreds of thousands of their right to vote. If there is a one percent chance that ONE woman might have a "convenience" abortion, we must proceed as if all abortions are done for that reason and force women to bear their rapist's children, deliver horribly disabled fetuses with no chance at life beyond a few hours or days, carry dead fetuses until they pass on their own, risk their own lives to deiver. If there is a one percent chance that one person in government with an Arabic name may at one time have had passing dealings with someone affiliated with a Muslim group someone in Congress doesn't like, we have to have a witch hunt.

Carrying the One Percent Doctrine over into guns, the logical position would be that if there is a one percent chance that someone is out there who might use guns for nefarious purposes, we must proceed as if it were a certainty, and restrict gun rights. But instead, when it comes to guns, the right falls completely apart at the hands of the insane leadership of the National Rifle Association.

We already know about the arsenal that James Holmes had amassed through perfectly legal means. Now it seems we have a copycat, who has amassed a similar arsenal:
Authorities have taken a man into custody who referred to himself as “a joker” and threatened to shoot people at his former workplace in Prince George’s County, investigators said Friday.

The investigators said that the man, identified in a warrant as Neil E. Prescott of Crofton, called Pitney Bowes this week and threatened to carry out a shooting there.

“I am a joker. I’m going to load my guns and blow everybody up,” the man said over the phone to a man at Pitney Bowes, according to a warrant. He later called back and acknowledged that it was not smart to be making such threats over the phone, investigators said.

Pitney Bowes called Prince George’s Police on Wednesday. The man lives in Crofton, and he was taken into custody there by Anne Arundel County police early Friday morning..

Police there found more than 20 rifles and handguns and 40 steel boxes of ammunition at his home, the investigators said.

When it comes to the Sublimated Penises of the Right Wing, the One Percent Doctrine flies right out the window. Because the right of James Holmes and Neil E. Prescott to amass enough weaponry to invade a small country, is "a basic freedom."

The inclination to amass an arsenal isn't surprising. With gun nuts, one weapon (or even a dozen or so) is never enough. Did you read that article by Jill Lepore in the New Yorker a few months back? She cites statistics that indicate that fewer and fewer people in the U.S. own guns, but the number of guns per owner keeps climbing. My reaction when I read that was basically, holy crap, just like the craziness seems to be getting more concentrated (i.e., there aren't actually many Tea Party true believers in proportion to the general population, but the ones there are tend to be fullblown batshit crazy), so is the weaponry.

The one percent doctrine also does not apply, in the right wing brain, to climate change. Any chance of total destruction of life as we know it on this planet is just a hoax perpetrated by a vast left wing conspiracy of people who were nerds in high school.
