Today's honoree: Yellow Dog, for The Great State Bankruptcy Con Game.

Money quote (repeat this to your wingnut friends over and over until it sinks in):
Because the real goal is not balancing state budgets: the goal is demonizing public employees in order to eliminate the largest remaining source of decent-paying middle-class jobs.

If you envy public employees whose jobs seem more secure and better-paying with better benefits than your job, destroying those jobs won't improve your situation by a dime.

Destroying public employee unions will make almost everyone's lives demonstrably worse. It's pretty simple, really. When unions are busted, secure, taxpaying people with modest incomes stop having the security to contribute to the consumer economy and can't pay their taxes. Next thing you know, your little towns' small businesses go belly up and your municipal governments cut services. No one can afford a house in your Galtian wasteland. Then your state's broke and you're Alabama.

If you're rich, though, this is the funniest scenario EVAR.

Agree!

It is amazing. Working for the government is a challenging profession, requiring honest dedicated people. The people doing the jobs are professionals and must be trained. It may glib to say 'any one can do the work' for the departments of Motor Vehicles/Public Health/Tax Collections.

For a governor of a state to attack the professional public servants is beyond belief. Untrained cronies working at government jobs are the worst possible mix of money and power.
