Christiane Amanpour talks to a rep from Doctors Without Borders who's on the ground in Haiti explaining that FOR THE SECOND TIME, one of their planes carrying medical supplies has been refused permission to land in Haiti:
The Haiti airport is extremely clogged because it has only a single taxiway (located at the center of the runway) and planes that land must taxi back to the center of the runway then off on that single taxiway. Most probably there simply wasn't any landing slots left for MSF's planes due to other high-priority cargos already queued up -- like the American Red Cross's loads of medical supplies.
Most supplies came into Haiti before the quake via the port. Unfortunately the port was demolished by the quake. But it needs to get re-opened, because the one single runway served by one single taxiway that is Haiti's only airport capable of landing large cargo planes simply can't handle the amount of demand being placed on it.
