Augh! Your lawn care guy is going to to come after you with torches and pitchforks!!!
Posted by Jill | 4:49 AM
You know who I'm talking about. I'm talking about the guy from Guatemala or Mexico who silently weed-whacks your lawn every week; the one you don't think about how much he gets paid or IF he gets paid because it's just too uncomfortable. Well, not MY lawn guys, because the guy who owns MY lawn service charges five bucks more per mowing than his competition, and 65 bucks/man/hour for spring and fall cleanup, but he provides health insurance for HIS guys, who are actual employees instead of exploited day laborers.

These are the people Republicans fear even more than they fear gay marriage, Gitmo detainees with superpowers who can break out of supermax prisons when no one else ever has, Nancy Pelosi's scary genitalia, and liberals who kill babies for sport. They think Michael Steele gets them off the hook for their past Scary Negroes(sic) rhetoric, but Scary Brown People from South of the Border are still fair game:
Republican members of Congress have been trying to subtly raise questions about Sonia Sotomayor’s objectivity — simply because of her non-traditional race, gender, and upbringing. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) said today that he is concerned Sotomayor has shown “personal bias based on ethnicity and gender.” Similarly, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) said in a statement today that Sotomayor may be subject to the “undue influence” of her race and gender:
Of primary concern to me is whether or not Judge Sotomayor follows the proper role of judges and refrains from legislating from the bench. Some of her recent comments on this matter have given me cause for great concern. In the months ahead, it will be important for those of us in the U.S. Senate to weigh her qualifications and character as well as her ability to rule fairly without undue influence from her own personal race, gender, or political preferences.

Responding to Inhofe, The American Prospect’s Dana Goldstein writes, “Yes. Because the worldviews of John Roberts, Sam Alito, John Paul Stevens, Anthony Kennedy, Stephen Breyer, and Antonin Scalia are not impacted at all by their white male identities. White men are raceless and genderless, haven’t you heard?”

Sotomayor is a Bush Sr. appointee, in case you haven't heard that yet. Of course Bush Sr. is no longer regarded as a Republican by the Party of Psychopaths. But this is a stroke of genius by Barack Obama. Rake her over the coals and you not only piss off the Latino community, but also ensure that if you block this nomination, he'll give you a REAL liberal. Sort of like George W. Bush did when he imposed the activist Samuel Alito on us.

Who is your lawn guy and does he come to Long Island? I'd drop my guy (exploitative bastid) in a heartbeat.

I figure Sotomayor's as good as we're going to get from Obama (given that I don't think "empathy" is an appropriate hiring criterion for SCOTUS.) She does, however, appear to be openly contemptuous of the Second Amendment. Wouldn't it be refreshing to have at least one justice who embraces the *entire* Bill of Rights? Oh well.

Um, if memory serves, Ms. Sotomayor's parents came from Puerto Rico. This makes them *legal* immigrants, as PR is a territory of the United States.

This lady should be a poster child for conservative values. Born into a poor family, she worked her butt off to go to a top school without much of anybody's help. Then she worked her butt off some more... and today she's a nominee for the Supreme Court.

Oh wait, they only like the "I worked hard to get where I am today without a lot of help but maybe a lucky break" story when applied to scrappy entrepreneurs. They don't like public servants to have that life story.

SCOTUS is NOT a court. It is a total disgrace. When you have 5 right wing catholics on your court, you have a clown court. Proof is that 95 per cent of all cases heard by the court are won by the corporation or the government. This is not a court.

I am already sick of you believers who think that one more person on the court makes one damn bit of difference. You missed the bit in first grade when it was taught that 5 is more than 4, 5 is more than 3, 5 is more than 2, 5 is more than 1.

Drop the discussion. No nomination makes one tiny little bit of change. Choke the "justice" system to death. No new justices, accept the bushco attorneys' resignations and don't replace them, no new circuit court justices. No more money for chairs, tables, computers, lunch out, no pay raises, no medical coverage, just choke it to death.

When three of the catholics resign then you may be able to do something. But you've got to choke the system to death.

BushCheney gang already proved that the SCOTUS is a immoral joke.
Obama nominating god would not improve the clown court.

Get over it. Put the time into ending that sicko set of wars. Medical care for all. Bust a couple of crooked banks. I don't care what else you work on or take an interest in, but the biggest waste of time and energy possible is to give any attention to the catholic clowns.

Hey, I was glad that Newt called her "racist." Remind everyone upfront he's in the Party of Old White Southern Men.

Barry - Openly contemptuous of the second amendment? Got some proof (like an actual ruling) to back up that talking point? She's been on the federal bench for many years, lots of on-line material to work with. Go for it.

I guess Barry doesn't know about "the Google." The case that the wingnuts are seizing on has to do with this case, which doesn't even address the issue of guns. Now, as the spouse of someone who has studied Shaolin kung-fu in the past, I'm not sure I agree with a law which states that a particular weapon associated with martial arts training has no redemptive value. But to latch on this case to brand Sotomayor as "anti-gun" is so much of a stretch that it would make Gumby cry "uncle!". But why let rationality get in the way of a good OMG THAT SCARY AFFIRMATIVE ACTION LATINA BROAD IS GONNA TAKE AWAY MY WEAPON!"

Castration anxiety much, dude?
