Where was Richard Lugar's concern about the Bush-Saudi connections?
Posted by Jill | 6:03 AM
At Hillary Clinton's confirmation hearing yesterday, Republican Sen. Richard Lugar said that the Clinton Global Initiative "exists as a temptation for any foreign entity or government that believes it could curry favor through a donation" and that "the bottom line is that even well-intentioned foreign donations carry risk for U.S. foreign policy."

Isn't it funny how Lugar never had any such concerns about the close relationship between the Bush family and the Saudis, or even between the Bush family and the Bin Laden family, not even after George H.W. Bush was enjoying a lovely breakfast with one of Osama Bin Laden's brother on the morning of the 9/11 attacks. Isn't it funny how Lugar was never concerned when Saudi nationals, including members of the Bin Laden family, were allowed to fly out of the country when the rest of the airline industry was still in shutdown in the days after the attacks. I don't recall Sen. Lugar being concerned about the risks to U.S. foreign policy of the Bush family's coziness with the Saudis. Or is this yet another case of "It's OK if You're a Republican?

The footage/set up of this on the Today Show this morning was enlightening. When Lugar asks about this, HRC smiles and you know EXACTLY what she's thinking. It's really a beautiful moment. Cut to Matt Lauer in the studio asking John Kerry if the hearing was not "a lovefest" and was she questioned brutally enough?

Dude. Dude! We don't elect through mortal combat anymore, and there is absolutely zero more we need to know about HRC than we learned over the last two (or seventeen) years.

Amazing how they skim over things like the Saudi lovefest with Bush, or the Cheney companies like Halliburton, but worry about a charity run by Bill Clinton. It makes me wonder how many Saudi dollars were in the investment banks that they bailed out w/o oversight on the tax dollars.

Oh, you mean Citibank, which is largely owned by the Saudis?

::::bats eyelashes::::Citibank? One of the "strong" banks chosen for cash relief so they could buy out competing smaller banks? Instead of helping struggling mortgage holders? THAT Citibank? Why, my goodness, who would suspect anything amiss there?
