Burning questions for our time

Why is the "How McCain could Win" scenario getting so much airplay in the media? Are they trying to put in people's heads a plausible reason to spin it if the Republicans manage to bring down enough voting machines in swing states and challenge enough first-time voters to steal the election for John McCain and his theocratic apocalyptic nutball running mate?

In parallel to this, I was trying to remember how the various newspapers treated the respective campaigns of Humphrey and Nixon in 1968. The press, from what I've gathered, loathed Nixon and liked Humphrey, and at that point actually had the tradition and ethic of objectivity.

I do not, however, have an answer to your question.

I can't help but suspect, though, that the media is certainly attempting to smother any perceived gains by the Obama campaign, which hints at trying to keep the horserace metaphor alive.

They can't just report the news; they have to create suspense through the introduction of new plots. My top headline news feeds aren't exactly loaded with campaign stories. Any complaint about "liberal" media would have to be that they are paying too much attention to the economy, forest fires, & murders.

Yes, it is a construct to report that the race is close or tightening so that are able to cheat to a 3rd win it looks plausible. If you really look at all of the moderate Republicans and staunch conservatives who are jumping ship and coming out for Obama, this should be a landslide.
The courts have been knocking down lawsuits and dirty tricks like voter caging by the Republicans this time around so I hope there is a chance.
I think the biggest change in this election has been the internet and the information available.
The Republicans are old school, smear and slime on a local level, they really have not caught on to how much has changed since 2004. Youtube didn't come online until 2005. They think they can still outright lie and no one will challenge, contradict or question them. Well, maybe the MSM won't, but the PEOPLE will.
Hopefully this is the year the PEOPLE take back the country.

Does anyone have a plan if the Repugs do steal this election?

Yes. That's exactly what they are doing. It's the same reason that they keep rallying against ACORN. I read today that John Boner wants ACORN's funds cut because of their "voter registration fraud", which isn't even a real thing. So far, Rachel Maddow is the only person I've seen on TV who is on top of the story, and even she is not talking about it nearly enough.
