More than just cowboy boots and good hair
Posted by Jill | 6:55 AM
I know that the homoerotic nature of male pundits is going to force them th fall madly in love with Rick Perry. After all, he's another grinning, glad-handing sack of shit govenor for Texas with a penchant for macho drag, a sibilant "s" in his speech, an ostentaiously religious man, with a history of lousy grades in college. Hey, what could go wrong?

Here's what could go wrong. We on the left talk a lot about "Christian Taliban", and we've taken a lot of crap because no one's yet in the streets beating up women for voting or wearing short skirts. But that could change under a Rick Perry or Michele Bachmann presidency, because both are part of Christian Reconstruction, as Rachel Maddow pointed out the other night:

I know guys like Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews love their mancrushes. I just hope that they look at the bigger picture when slobbering all over this guy, at the very least, read this article before deciding that cowboy boots and a full head or hair are sufficient qualifications for presiding over a diverse nation.

"No one's yet beating up wimmen (Texas talk) for voting and wearing short skirts." No they won't be either. Liberal commentator Bill Maher said that some cultures are better than others; meaning ours is better than the 3rd world Muslim culture. I see plenty of loons running around in this nation wearing the cloak of Christianity but I just don't see any "Christian Taliban."

I grant you this though; Perry is not the guy to run this country. He is frankly no more qualified than the current POTUS. Romney is sometimes seen as a phony but he does not hold a candle to Gov Good Hair.

Another dumbass Texan who was told by Jeebus he ought to be President. We know how well that worked out with the last Texas yeehaw whom God anointed for the job.

Why does God hate America?

Just because they haven't started beating up women for anything they consider an indiscretion doesn't mean they won't. And they have other ways to get people to conform, convert, and obey. They are the christian taliban because that is exactly what they want. You may think that is unkind tagging them that way. Think about how unkind they are/will be when they have even more power and aren't afraid to use it. You don't have to look farther than congress to see what the CT road taken looks like.

@Christian Cabby: You try getting an abortion in North Carolina (it's illegal to "avert your eyes" from the state-mandated ultrasound before you're allowed an abortion) or Oklahoma (when you get your mandated ultrasounds "a doctor or technician set up the monitor so the woman can see it and describe the heart, limbs and organs of the fetus. No exceptions are made for rape and incest victims." Women who have had a disabled baby are barred from suing a doctor for withholding information about birth defects while the child was in the womb. But that's not all! The OK legislature is trying to pass one bill that "would force women to fill out a lengthy questionnaire about their reasons for seeking an abortion; statistics based on the answers would then be posted online" and another bill that "restricts insurance coverage for the procedures").

Virginia and Kansas have passed "stricter regulations" on abortion providers forcing them to comply with "hospital-style structural demands" that require "time-consuming and costly structural changes in order to continue to serve patients—or face closure." The three abortion providers in Kansas have brought a lawsuit and will be allowed to operate until it is resolved.

And that's not all the states in which the Christian Taliban have been active.

Really? No Christian Taliban?

Didn't Texas have the pleasure of hosting David Koresh? Didn't we just put some unrepentant Mormon kiddy rapist in prison? Are there not "Christians" in Texas that "home-skool" their children so that they won't be corrupted by the horrors of biology, evolution, history and physics?

Yeah, we got Christian Taliban in this country and our Bartender friend here is drooling to put them in power.

Pangolin,
I really don't want to put any so called "Christian Taliban" in power. In fact I can't think of anything worse. I generally don't trust extremists on either the left or right. They all end up, historically in the same place. That place is totalitarianism. I don't want my country being run by the flower power childish leftists nor by the ultra right nuts.

Thankfully in this country the electorate usually seems to discard the fringe candidates. Usually. For instance the leftist fringe whines that President Obama is not far enough to the left while the far right calls the man a Socialist at every opportunity. I would guess that you, sir, fall into the category of the ultra left. Your right to do so of course, just don't expect anyone to really take you seriously.

BTW I will grant you that I am glad I am not a science teacher in this state. I work with some and they have to tread very carefully when "evolution time" in the curriculum comes around.

I am really trying hard here not to label you an idiot. I have done pretty well. Don't you think?
