Hey, Mom, Alan Simpson thinks you should go out and get a job

And here you have it, folks...the Republican view on Social Security:
Alan Simpson believes that Social Security is "like a milk cow with 310 million tits," according to an email he sent to the executive director of National Older Women's League Tuesday morning. Simpson co-chairs the deficit commission, which is considering various proposals to cut Social Security benefits.

Simpson's email, which OWL chief Ashley Carson released publicly, (PDF) was sent in response to an April blog post Carson wrote for the Huffington Post. Carson criticized Simpson for repeatedly describing his Social Security opponents as "Pink Panthers," arguing that the description had sexist connotations.

His email is peppered with exclamation points and condescension. At one point he urged Carson to read a certain graph, "which I hope you are able to discern if you are any good at reading graphs."

Simpson concludes by implying that leading a major organization dedicated to the interests of middle-aged and elderly women is not "honest work."

"If you have some better suggestions about how to stabilize Social Security instead of just babbling into the vapors, let me know," he writes. "And yes, I've made some plenty smart cracks about people on Social Security who milk it to the last degree. You know 'em too. It's the same with any system in America. We've reached a point now where it's like a milk cow with 310 million tits! Call when you get honest work!"

Yes, friends, this piece of human excrement, whom the supposedly socialist President personally appointed to head his deficit panel, would have my 83-year-old mother, who has COPD, to go out and get "honest work." My mother, who worked from the time she was eighteen until she was in her sixties -- and would have worked longer except that no one wanted to hire a 60=plus-year-old legal/medical secretary/office manager, is supposed to go out and get honest work. That's Alan Simpson's idea of what the elderly should do. I would ask Alan Simpson why HE doesn't go out and get an honest job instead of, well, sucking at the public teat, which he did for twenty-two years before going off to practice law -- that OTHER field that Republicans profess to hate even though they do it themselves.

It should be noted that in addition to income from his law practice, Alan Simpson receives a federal pension -- paid for by taxpayers.

Wrong target. If progressives want to have any hope of moving this frame to the left, or at lease stopping it's movement to the right, the headline, and subsequent pounding of the message should be:


"Hey, Mom, Barack Obama and the Republicans think you should go out and get a job"

Alan Simpson has been gnawing away at the social safety net of this country for decades. He is a disgrace and a stench in the nostrils of any decent person. He ought to be fired immediately and very, very publically.

It's useful when they express their contempt honestly. He was always a terrible pick for a terrible panel, but if this gets him canned, great.

I hope to goodness I can still work at 67 (the age at which I will be eligible for social security checks running about $2,400 a month). I'd love to be able to postpone collecting social security checks until long after that -- or never have to collect them at all.
Unfortunately society is the ultimate sexist and ageist and I will be seen asan old lad, who is too old and feeble to continue in my job. Changing those attitudes is the change we should all be working for!

Everyone seems to be overlooking what got us into this mess. After taxing us to collect the Social Security "trust funds," our government misspent the money entrusted to them. Unfortunately, Mr. Simpson's underlying assumption is correct. The money has gone to "money heaven" and is not coming back. It was spent on, e.g., banker bonuses, keeping people in houses they could not afford, propping up AIG, Fannie & Freddie, condoms(?), maintaining and expanding a foreign empire, etc. Until the government's ability to spend is constrained, this problem will not go away.
