Thursday Big Blue Smurf Blogging: What They Said
Posted by Jill | 6:48 AM
Today's honoree: none other than the inimitable Bustednuckles, who reminds our short attention span public just why the hell we're STILL in Afghanistan in the first place.

Money quote:

Now remember this,
one of our highly trained warrior specialists actually had Osama Bin Laden in the cross hairs of his sniper rifle, called Command for permission to pull the trigger and blow that motherfuckers head off and was denied permission by one fucking guy.

That one fucking guy was George W. Bush, the President of the United States of America.
That same, Bring It On, Dead Or Alive , Mission Accomplished, guy.

This conflict could have been stopped in it's tracks years ago except for that.

Word.

I have to tell you: I can't find any, you know, historical record of the event described in your post. Could you point us toward an authoritative (i.e. non-frothing-at-the-mouth blogger) source on this?

There is a legend that Sandy Berger did such in 2000, but he insists not.

Bush probably wanted to wait until he could meet OBL alone at Reichenbach Falls.

After I asked about it, Busted Knuckles posted an update with a Reuters link. We never heard about it because it involved two French snipers.

I have updated the post as JP points out, it was factually incorrect.
Yes, It was two French snipers, in two different years that had OBL in their sights asking for permission to pull the trigger.
JP asks a pertinent question later, why would French snipers be under Bushes control and the answer to that is in the updated article;

"France has roughly 200 elite troops operating under US command near Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan at the time."

Sorry for the confusion but I still say Bush had a chance to take him out and didn't, I forgot a few salient facts, like it happened twice.

Osama was just a pawn in a game played by much bigger opponents. Once his money ran out his star value faded fast. Blowing his head off won't end the Afghano-Pakistan conflict because it's still very lucrative to the military industrial complex and its pocket politicos. It may actually elevate him to martyr status, giving him another fifteen minutes on center stage.

Besides, allowing the French to do the deed would have been uncool, what with the 'Freedom Fries' and all that.

At any rate it's too late to do anything about it now, he being directly related to the President of the United States and all.

Let me get this straight: Your evidence of this is a link to a left wing blogger, who links to another left wing blogger, who links to a press release, that says a French documentary makes an unsubstantiated claim (in 2006) that four French soldiers said that they had bin Laden in their sights twice in Afghanistan in 2002 (when bin Laden was known to already have absconded to Pakistan/Waziristan) -- a claim which even the French government calls "pure fabrication" -- and you expect to be taken seriously?

You guys make Glen Beck look credible!
