What the McCain/Palin theocracy will look like
Posted by Jill | 3:49 PM
Oh, that Sarah Palin is a piece of work. No wonder she makes the Republican base so happy, she sees nothing wrong with using state funds to travel to her to her old church in Wasilla to exhort the youth to "make sure God's will be done here":

State records show that Palin submitted a travel authorization for a quick round-trip visit to attend the June 8 graduation of the Master's Commission program at the Wasilla Assembly of God, the church where she was baptized at age 12. The only other item on the agenda for that trip was a "One Lord Sunday" service involving a network of Mat-Su Christian churches earlier that morning at the Wasilla sports complex.

The records show Palin flew from Juneau to Anchorage on Saturday, June 7. She returned to Juneau that Monday afternoon. The plane tickets cost the state $519.50, and she claimed an additional $120 for meals and other expenses.

Palin couldn't be reached for comment Friday as she campaigned for vice president. Her spokeswoman at the McCain campaign said she wouldn't grant an interview.

Of course not. Asking any questions of Sarah Palin is sexist, don'tcha know.

The problem that I'm having with this "God's will" stuff is that in Christianity, one is commanded to love one's neighbor as oneself. Doesn't say anything about Alaskan gas pipelines.

I actually watched a 14:26 video from her appearance at that church.

It made me sick and I am sitting here with notes not sure how to write about it.

That she used state funds and would continue to do so makes me fume.

I watched Sarah Palin speak at the RNC last week and I was moved down to the core of my self-identified woman-roots by her larger-than-life presence! Women make up over 50% of the population and we are hungry for true representation in our assinine government, especially after the last 8 years of fraternity politics! Even to the point that we yearn for someone like Sarah Palin (if only she had the right policies on more stuff!!) to be on the ticket we vote for. Yet, after that initial charge, the reality of her politics begins to seep into our consciousness and we realize, sadly, that she does not represent anything close to a progressive agenda.

After watching the primetime RNC speeches, on the heels of the democratic speeches, I can see that what this election has come down to is a vote for an ultraconservative, God-fearing white woman (even though she's the VP candidate)that describes herself as a pit bull with lipstick versus a vote for a progressive, thoughtful, rather mild-mannered black man (purportedly liberal, but, truly moderate) who is actually running at the top of his ticket.

Like all things American these days it is going to boil down to sex appeal. The young black man has been described as "good-looking", even "attractive" and called a "celebrity" in a negative way. The young white woman (now with clearly rock star celebrity status) has been described by many as a "babe", has garnered support from a large percentage of working class white men, has been identified as a beauty queen, and a "naughty librarian". You can almost see the men drooling over her.

Now that the nation has become obsessed with the "babe", Sarah Palin, will we ever be able to bring the discussion back to the serious issues at hand? If ever a woman was objectified, it is the Governor of Alaska. If she thinks that all of this support is truly because of her politics, I think she is deluding herself.

But, let's assume that some people are actually thinking about her as a viable politician because that is the scary reality we are facing. I believe that the true choice of this election comes down to a Palin Presidency vs. an Obama Presidency. I believe that if McCain/Palin win this election, we will have embarked on a true Theocracy and the civil liberties that we fought so hard for, that have gradually been eroded in recent years, will continue to slip away from us.

So, I have to ask myself what is truly God's will at this time? Given that God is not a man, or a woman, that God is love and not hate, that God is inclusive and not exclusive, and that Jesus was clearly a supporter of the separation of church and state (reference the new testament scripture that quotes Jesus as saying "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's"), I have to believe that a Theocracy is not what God would will for us at this, or at any time. But alas, I am not an expert on what God wills, unlike Sarah Palin.

I ask you, are we electing a pastor or a president?

Rise up and fight for the right to be free!!!
