Nope...this has nothing to do with our friend Pervez Musharraf...
Posted by Jill | 8:34 AM
Just two days after we get the news that billions of dollars in aid the U.S. gave to Pervez Musharraf for combatting al-Qaeda was used instead to build weapons systems to use against India, we find out this morning that Musharraf's leading opponent, Benazir Bhutto, has been assassinated:

Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw body parts and flesh scattered at the back gate of the Liaqat Bagh park in Rawalpindi where the rally was held. He counted about 20 bodies, including police, and could see many other wounded.

The road outside was stained with blood and people screamed for ambulances. Others gave water to the wounded lying in the street. The clothing of some of the victims was shredded and people put party flags over their bodies.

The bomb went off just minutes after Bhutto spoke to thousands of supporters and she appeared to be the target of the attack. Farahtullah Babar, the spokesman for her party, said her vehicle was about 50 yards away from blast which went off as she was leaving the rally venue.

First off, many, many thanks for your always brilliant insight.

Now to this morning's wake-up news:

Nothing like having a newk-you-lur armed-to-the-teeth and out-of-control power assassination of the opposition leader.

The US "national emergency" has just been defined. The only question I have is simply the time that will elapse between now and when Bush declares elections off and martial law enforced for "the security of the Murkun peepul."

Interesting comment, n=1. Hadn't considered Pakistan's collapse to be an American national emergency worthy of martial law.

But an interesting scenario I've pondered: Have one of the "nukes in a shipping container" [Pakistani, of course, but until now to be blamed on Iran or NK!?] go boom in Denver about August 27. [I had generally assumed it would be about September! But the DNC Convention would be a perfect venue!] That would definitely be reason to cancel our elections -- and very much in keeping with the Pakistani tradition of "democracy".

Now, would Bush "blame" his buddy and fellow democracy supporter Musharraf enough to return the "present" or would he still blame [only?] Iran. Or just "spank everybody" because one of the kids misbehaved...

Ted:

You're right. it's not an event which is "....an American natioanl emergency worthy of martial loaw." But when have facts gotten in the way of cheney/Bush? The shape facts to policy, remember? 9/11, 9/11, 9/11 - that mechanism of national hypnosis.

n=1,

Don't get me wrong! I expect something to occur that will allow BushCo to declare an emergency and suspend or greatly modify the elections. I just don't [didn't!] expect it to be a Pakistani emergency. I expected it to be domestic!
[Consider that even Bush needs a 'credible' excuse for his actions. He can't be sure that the military -- for example -- would tolerate a simple outright coup. And there might be some true patriots armed to the teeth out there! So there needs to be some 'credible' event to go with it. 9/11. 9/11. 9/11.]

Before a casual conversation over the Holidays, I expected it would not occur until AFTER the parties had decided on their candidates. However, an offhanded [at least I hope it was offhanded!] comment made me realize that nuking, 'dirty bombing', or otherwise seriously damaging Denver during the DNC Convention would indeed serve the same purpose, guaranteeing both an 'emergency situation' necessitating modifying the election [all the Dems of stature are dead or seriously injured! the party is in serious disarray.] Bush 'compassionately' postpones -- ala Musharraf!? -- the elections to allow the country time to reselect candidates and to mourn the dead and injured!!! [He doesn't need to suggest how long this process might take!] and almost assuring that when the election is allowed to occur the Repubs have a serious edge.. Maybe they'll even be persuaded to 'draft' Jeb!..

I wasn't surprised. Just like Benito Aquino, she was marked the moment she announced her return from exile.
