Bush (hearts) terror threats
Posted by Jill | 8:23 PM
Nothing warms the cockles of George W. Bush's evil little heart quite so much as a terrorist threat he can use for political advantage:

US President George W. Bush seized on a foiled London airline bomb plot to hammer unnamed critics he accused of having all but forgotten the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks

First of all, it's insulting to anyone in the New York metro area to accuse us of having forgotten 9/11. That giant hole in the ground in lower Manhattan reminds us every time we're in the city, and when we're not, there's a giant hole in the skyline -- and just as a bonus, most of are no more than two people removed from someone who died in the collapse.

Second of all, most of us haven't forgotten how George W. Bush received a PDB on August 6, 2001, stating quite baldly that Osama Bin Laden was preparing to strike in the U.S. -- and did nothing. And we haven't forgotten how he sat in a classroom for seven minutes after hearing that the second plane had hit the World Trade Center. And we haven't forgotten how he flew away to Nebraska after 2700 helpless people died when the buildings collapsed. And we haven't forgotten how he took us to war on lies and deceit -- an unnecessary war that not only had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks, but have made the terrorism problem worse.

If you care to believe that the British thwarted a major terrorist attack today, let's look at how they did it. They did it through effective police work. Not by mass surveillance of an entire country's phone calls and web searches; not by invading yet another country, but through effective police work. So remind me again how anything Bush is doing is making us one iota safer.

"It is a mistake to believe there is no threat to the United States of America," he said. "We've taken a lot of measures to protect the American people. But obviously we still aren't completely safe."

His remarks came a day after the White House orchestrated an exceptionally aggressive campaign to tar opposition Democrats as weak on terrorism, knowing what Democrats didn't: News of the plot could soon break.

Vice President Dick Cheney and White House spokesman Tony Snow had argued that Democrats wanted to raise what Snow called "a white flag in the war on terror," citing as evidence the defeat of a three-term Democratic senator who backed the Iraq war in his effort to win renomination.

But Bush aides on Thursday fought the notion that they had exploited their knowledge of the coming British raid to hit Democrats, saying the trigger had been the defeat of Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut by an anti-war political novice.

"The comments were purely and simply a reaction" to Democratic voters who "removed a pro-defense Senator and sent the message that the party would not tolerate candidates with such views," said Snow.

The public relations offensive "was not done in anticipation. It was not said with the knowledge that this was coming," the spokesman said.

One word: Bullshit. Utter, complete bullshit. These kinds of terror alerts ONLY come around when Bush is in political trouble. There were a rash of them before the 2004 election, and then they stopped. On Tuesday, Connecticut voters sent him as loud a message as they sent Joe Lieberman -- and he didn't like what he heard.

And in case you still doubt that the Administration is ever-vigilant for what they hope are still opportunities to make cheap political points:

"Weeks before September 11th, this is going to play big," said another White House official, who also spoke on condition of not being named, adding that some Democratic candidates won't "look as appealing" under the circumstances.

What's even more repulsive is that they knew about this threat for days -- and they allowed tens of thousands of Americans to get on airplanes, blissfully unaware that a plot was underfoot to blow them up in midair. And we're supposed to trust this bunch in the fight against terrorism?

Mark my words tonight, my friends: If it starts looking like the Democrats are going to rout the Republicans in November to a degree than not even Diebold can save them, there WILL be a terrorist attack in this country before November. There will be one because this Administration will know about it and allow it to play out. And then they will declare martial law, cancel the election, and let loose their little plan to allow Donald Rumsfeld to declare every one of the 60% of Americans who oppose this war as enemy combatants.

Do you think they won't do it?

They'll do it because they'll have no choice. Because if their little sycophants don't control the House and Senate, and they are held accountable, they are all going to jail. And American self-appointed aristocracy like the Bush Crime Family and their cronies will nuke their own fucking country before they will go to jail.
