Vietnam Veterans of America

You know the Vietnam Veterans of America, right? They're the group that sends you those postcards in the mail saying that they're going to be in your neighborhood and asking for donations of household goods. You call them, give them your address, put out your bag o'stuff that morning in a bag labelled "VVA", and they leave you a receipt and a bright yellow bag for next time.

As Tristero reports,

But it provides philanthropic assistance to Vietnam Vets that need it, works with homeless vets. and has worked for twenty years in the effort for a full accounting of POW/MIAs.

In addition, the VVA site says they are "single-handedly leading the fight for judicial review of disabled veterans' claims for benefits. The result: In 1988, Congress passed a law creating the U.S. Court of Veterans appeals. This allowed veterans to appeal VA benefits denials to a court and required VA to obey the rule of law."


A good outfit, right? The kind of organization you want to support, right? They're not flashy, they don't have a giant edifice somewhere in the south, they just quietly go about their business, picking up your kids' hand-me-downs and the clothes you've finally decided you'll never wear again, all in the service of helping Vietnam veterans and their families. Good people. Good organization. Well, you know who one of the co-founders of VVA was?

John Kerry.
