Burning questions for our time
Posted by Jill | 8:24 AM
Why is it that when a guy with a gun shoots a school full of Amish kids, or goes on a rampage at a college, it receives nonstop coverage for a week...but when a guy with a gun and a house full of treatises by Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and Michael the Savage Weiner, Joe Scarborough is talking about Obama "dissing the troops"?

Did I say this here yesterday? If so I apologize for repeating myself.

I overheard two wingnuts in my office discussing the shooting. They concluded that the guy was crazy. It had nothing to do with the fact that he'd been mainlining hate for who knows how long.

Just plain crazy. Case dismissed.

Probably for the same reasons one doesn't hear much about Timothy McVeigh and whatzisname from that quarter (whereas "Ruby Ridge" is still a touchstone on the right):

1. The "victim" narrative (i.e., that the shooter was really the victim) isn't going to work;

2. Nobody on the right wants to face the logical result of the torrent of spew inundating the public. Notice that they will never take responsibility for their words. (This is also a problem on the far left, but the far left has so far not called for shipping reactionaries to Alaska and walling them in. Unless I've missed something.)

3. The mainstream news media people may still be trying to figure how to play it so that the right doesn't have to take responsibility for hate pumped 24/7 (high ratings and profit, don't you know), and distraction has been their principal weapon up to now.

(Because I keep seeing that name as "Chuck" Scarborough.)

As if that weren't enough, there's also the possibility for certain pseudoreligious "ministries" exploiting Jim Adkisson's casus belli for the near-massacree to raise funds for a sham "Legal Defence Fund" based on a shared delusion of Mr. Adkisson facing the prospect of martyrdom?
