Security details at Barack Obama's rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.
The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security.
Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department's homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order -- apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service -- was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena's vacant seats before Obama came on.
"Sure," said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a "friendly crowd."
The Secret Service did not return a call from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.

FTFY.
If he gets past Texas (in one piece, god willing), he'll put the nail in Hillary's coffin and then sail past McCain. But I'm REALLY worried that some crazy'll take a shot at him at a rally. So he better f***in' have great security. And this story is not encouraging.
I sincerely hope someone (Michelle Obama perhaps?) makes a REALLY big deal of this dereliction of duty by the security officers tasked with protecting Obama.
Heads should roll.
Why isn't anyone making more of a big deal about O'Idiot's "lynching party" statement? It's way worse than saying Hillary's "pimping" out Chelsea in my book, yet I haven't seen much on it at all.
I've been involved with the USSS in the past. They wouldn't normally give a f**k if the entire populace was left outside if it meant protecting "their man". I don't think this was an accident. Someone, somewhere...
Although were that really true, I suspect someone in the line really would have been packing -- and likely tried to use it....
