I get the sense that someone ran the name of Bush's old Skull and Bones buddy Robert McCallum to take over as Patrick Fitzgerald's boss up the flagpole and nobody saluted. In fact,
Michael Isikoff and bloggers everywhere pointed out that assigning a buddy of the president whose staffers are being investigated to oversee the guy conducting the investigation was not qualitatively different from Nixon firing Archibald Cox.
So the Administration has backed off. Instead, the departing Deputy Attorney General James Comey,
has made the pick, assigning instead one David Margolis, a 40-year veteran of the Justice Department.I suspect this means they're going to go the pardon route when indictments come down. If Rove is indicted, he'll be pardoned on the grounds that "the President needs his wise counsel during these trying times." Bush's supporters will think he's talking about war and terrorism. We will know that he's talking about his poll numbers.
